High Society — history and recipe

“High Society” refers to the social elite, and in the cocktail world it is a refreshing long drink from the last century. It became more popular in the neighbouring Czech Republic than in its native Germany, thanks to the now legendary Bugsy’s Bar in Prague. The bar opened on 31 March 1995 and soon appeared among the world’s best bars. Its two owners, Václav Vojíř and Zdeněk Šulc, had previously worked at a bar near Munich whose owner was preparing for a bartending competition with a recipe for a refreshing gin-based long drink. Sudden illness meant he never entered the competition. The drink was gradually forgotten, and the two men returned to Prague to open their dream cocktail bar. Shortly after they began putting together their first drinks menu, however, they remembered High Society and listed it as number 165. Thanks to these two gentlemen, the drink reached our part of the world and became popular as a delicious, refreshing companion for long summer evenings.
